Over the past 100 years, humankind significantly increased production of synthetic chemicals, driven mostly by expansion of the petrochemical industry. Tens of thousands of chemicals are now in use worldwide, and most have never been tested for human health impacts.

As researchers have investigated potential links between exposures and various diseases and disabilities, there is mounting evidence that the health risks may far outweigh the benefits we derive from using some of these chemicals.
