Plastics

Production of plastics has increased more than tenfold since 1970. Each stage of the plastics lifecycle, from production to use and disposal, has adverse effects on human health. Many chemicals added to plastics are known to be toxic. The production and disposal of plastics is unjustly concentrated near low-income communities and communities of color. In addition, plastics are a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions and climate warming.

We can protect our health and the environment from the harms of plastics. Solutions include capping global plastic production, banning unnecessary and problematic plastic items, creating transparency about what is in plastics, ensuring people can participate in decision-making across the plastics lifecycle, and following the precautionary and polluter pays principles. CHE is working with scientists and policy-makers to identify and implement solutions like these.
