A variety of tools have been created for collecting consumer product data and making it available for research. This webinar will explore one such product.
The Clearya app was created originally to provide a means for individuals to gather information on chemicals in consumer products they are considering for purchase, or are already using.
As users interact with the app, data on products and their ingredients is automatically collected, analyzed, and added to the database. Over millions of uses, this process has transformed the app into an increasingly rich and comprehensive source of information on a wide range of individual products.
Building on this infrastructure, Clearya has now been used in numerous studies by researchers, regulators and advocates, providing a means to gather information on chemicals in personal care products, to assess individuals’ exposures, and to learn more about how chemicals in products may vary across geographic areas and types of retail settings. It is also being used to analyze the accuracy of chemical hazard information provided to workers through Safety Data Sheets.
In this webinar, Amit Rosner will present a range of ways in which the Clearya app and environmental health and justice platform have been used in public health research studies, including hyperlocal analysis of prevalence of chemicals of concern in products sold across specific neighborhood, personal care product use patterns, mass screening of chemicals in products marketed to Black women and girls, and accuracy reviews of safety data sheets, among other projects. Charlotte Brody will discuss a collaboration between BlueGreen Alliance and Clearya to evaluate the accuracy of safety data sheets. Dr. Elissia Franklin will provide additional information about how Clearya has been integrated into ongoing research on women’s exposures to toxic chemicals in personal care products.
Featured Speakers
Amit Rosner is Co-founder and CEO at Clearya. Prior to founding Clearya, Amit served in leadership roles at various technology companies, including Co-founder and CEO at Generaytor and Yeloha (social web startups promoting renewable energy), Co-founder and CMO at Remoty (a sharing economy platform for remote tech-support via augmented reality), and Director of Marketing at SolarEdge (a global solar energy leader). Amit holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Computational Biology, and MBA.
Charlotte Brody, RN is Vice President of Health Initiatives at BlueGreen Alliance. Prior to joining the BlueGreen Alliance, she was the National Field Director for Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, a nationwide effort to pass smart federal policies to protect us from toxic chemicals. A registered nurse, Charlotte previously served as the Director of Programs for Green For All, Executive Director of Commonweal, and a founder and Executive Director of Health Care Without Harm.
Elissia Franklin, PhD is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Silent Spring Institute. She has expertise in mass spectrometry-based analysis of biomolecules, which she is applying to the Institute’s biomonitoring studies and investigations of the human exposome. Dr. Franklin’s research focuses on evaluating chemical exposure injustice among women based on race, education, and other demographics. Her work is helping to advance the Institute’s intervention studies, exposure evaluations, and epidemiological and community-based research. Dr. Franklin also has a strong interest in research translation and using her scientific training to address issues faced by Black womxn. One way she does this is through her podcast, The Research Her. She earned her PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Purdue University, where her thesis titled "Incorporation of the Paternò–Büchi reaction into mass spectrometry-based systems for lipid structural characterization" explored the utilization of in-solution modification with gas-phase ion chemistry for lipid elucidation.
