As the federal government continues to roll back and undermine critical environmental and public health protections, efforts to drive hazardous chemicals out of the marketplace through consumer and retailer actions are more critical than ever.
The Mind the Store campaign has been successfully driving the nation's largest retailers to eliminate toxic chemicals in products and packaging and drive a race to the top to create comprehensive safer chemicals policies. Mike Schade, Mind the Store Campaign Director for Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, spoke about the campaign, latest developments in the retail sector, this year's forthcoming 2018 retailer report card coming out in November, and how individuals can get involved to protect consumers, workers, and communities from unnecessary toxic chemicals.
Beautycounter believes that lasting change happens where education and advocacy meet, and tirelessly advocates for stricter guidelines and regulatory laws to shift the personal care industry away from harmful and questionable ingredients. The United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938, and there are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today, many with no safety data whatsoever. Hear Lindsay Dahl, Beautycounter's Vice President of Social & Environmental Responsibility, spoke about Beautycounter’s ingredient policy and advocacy and their work to educate customers about harmful chemicals in beauty products, recommending safer alternatives whenever possible and empowering individuals to demand better from the beauty industry.
